Computer Access & Policies

The public computers are located upstairs at Hastings LibraryHastings District Libraries provide computers with access to the Internet, email and online databases at all three libraries.

These facilities are available during normal opening hours. 

Some services are free, some are chargeable using prepaid timecodes - see below for these. Printing & scanning are available.

Hastings Library has 9 Kiosk PCs and 3 Research PCs (for databases).  These are located upstairs (see photo). Please note there is a lift opposite the carpark entrance.

Flaxmere & Havelock North Libraries both have Kiosk PCs for public use.

All PCs are available on a first come, first served basis.

Free Services

  • Databases (1 hour time limit in Hastings Library and 30 minutes time limit in Flaxmere & Havelock North Libraries - extensions available if no one else is waiting)
  • All the following are available for 30 minutes no charge (extensions available if no one else is waiting):
    • Job searches
    • News
    • Government sites
    • Education sites
    • Reference & information searches, as discussed with staff

Chargeable Services

  • Email (Staff can assist with setting up an email account - check with Carla wording of poster)
  • Social networking sites, e.g. Facebook, Bebo, YouTube etc.
  • Banking, commercial transactions
  • Wordprocessing, MS Office applications

Prepaid Timecode Tickets

Access to chargeable services is via prepaid timecode tickets:

  • Timecode tickets are available at the Issue desks (EFTPOS available) and the Reference desk upstairs in Hastings Library (cash only).
  • Extra time may be added to timecode tickets. 
  • Tickets may be stopped at any time, then reactivated at any time.
  • Tickets are the responsibility of the customer.  The libraries are not liable for lost tickets.
  • No refunds for unused time.

Printing

  • Laser printers are available at all three libraries
  • A4 black prints
  • A4 colour prints

Scanning

  • Scanning is available at all three libraries
  • No charge if customer does own scans
  • Staff can do scans for you but there are charges for this see Services - Charges

USB Memory Sticks, Flash Memory Cards

  • USB memory sticks - you are welcome to use your USB memory stick in our Kiosk PCs but not in the Research PCs as these are part of the Council network
  • Memory Cards - some of our Kiosk PCs have slots for memory cards.  Please ask staff about these.

Headsets

  • The sound is turned off on all our public PCs
  • You are invited to bring in your own headsets to plug into our PCs
  • We do have some headsets to lend you while using our PCs

CDRoms & USB

  • We have blank CDRoms for sale -  see Services - Charges
  • From time to time we have new USB memory sticks for sale

Conditions of Use

General

  • Charges apply for some services - see Services - Charges
  • If you use a free internet service then change to a chargeable service, please pay for a timecode, otherwise staff reserve the right to charge you for the whole recorded time
  • PC time usage can be limited by staff at times of high demand
  • The sound on public PCs is switched off, in considerabtion for other users
  • Please inform staff immediately if you are having difficulties using a PC
  • Please remember the library is a public place.  If what you view causes discomfort to staff or others, staff may ask you to stop viewing the site
  • Please note that uploading & downloading of music, videos, eBooks etc is not permitted because of copyright and bandwith restrictions

Unlawful Use

  • Library internet / email access may not be used for any activities that are prohibited by New Zealand law, including Copyright legislation.

Not to be Published

  • Information may not be published or uploaded from library PCs that:
    • violates or infringes upon the rights of any other person
    • is abusive, profane or sexually offensive to an average person

Use of Equipment

  • No changes are to be made to the set up or configuration of the PC software or hardware
  • No software may be downloaded or installed on library PCs
  • Repair costs will be charged to the user responsible for the problem 

Children and Students using the Internet

  • Parents or guardians are responsible for their children's internet use in Hastings District Libraries
