Duffy Books in Homes Public Library ProgrammesIn a new and exciting initiative The Association of Public Library Managers (APLM) has joined forces with Duffy Books in Homes to offer Duffy kids all around New Zealand a free book reward when they use their public library regularly.
The Duffy Books in Homes Programme features a theatre show that visits all schools participating in the programme - this year’s show is Duffy’s Book Bus Adventure. The interactive show, put on by talented young kiwi blokes, is a fun way of showing the joys and benefits of reading.
At the show reward cards are given to all Duffy kids to encourage them to visit libraries and encourage a lifelong love of reading, fostering a sense of belonging to libraries that can be carried beyond school and into their adult lives.
Hastings District Library staff have embraced this programme and visited all 17 Duffy schools in the Hastings district. In turn many of the schools have made class and whanau visits to the Hastings, Havelock North or Flaxmere Libraries. These visits give the children, some of whom have never been in a public library before, the opportunity to meet staff, join the library and learn that is the library is ‘their place’ too.
Duffy: I find what I want and bring it to you
Library: And I will take you through what you need to do
D: I give you the book, and my library card
L: I’ll scan it through, that part isn’t hard.
D: Now this book is mine to look after a while
L: I’ll say enjoy it and give you a smile
D: I’ll take it home and I’ll read it through
Both: But remember when its due!
