HB Earthquake 1931 - 80th Anniversary

Image: Hastings Post Office

Tuesday 3 February 1931 - at 10.46am Hawke's Bay was devastated by two violent shocks in quick succession.  The 7.8 earthquake was felt around the world.  There are many remarkable stories - of tragedy, of lucky escapes - followed by the aftermath, with stories of organising rescues, medical aid, relief, and shelter. Then there are the stories of reconstructing buildings and lives.

Along with all the other commemorations, our libraries are marking this anniversary with displays, a talk at Cafe at Westerman's, a radio interview, and with a new section on our website: Hawke's Bay Earthquake 1931 (under Find Information).
