| Hastings War Memorial Library
- 50th
anniversary |
|

|
|
The Hastings War Memorial Library was
declared officially open by the Dominion vice-president of the RSA, Mr
Hamilton Mitchell, at a dedication ceremony on 18 October 1959. This
followed many years of debate and controversy over the form that a
war memorial should take after World War 2. The opening was almost three years after the foundation stone was laid by
Major-General Sir
Andrew Russell on Monday 11 November 1956, Remembrance Day. More on the history of the Hastings
Library >>
Remembrance Day 2009 - one minute
silence was observed at 11am on Wednesday 11 November, the
anniversary of Armistice Day in 1918. The armistice was an
agreement to cease hostilities between the Allies and the Germans,
signed at 5am and coming into effect at 11am. It was signed in a railway
carriage in the forest of Compiegne, 65kms north-east of Paris.
The formal peace treaty was signed at Versailles the following year.

| Email Notices: Library members now
have the option of receiving all notices by email rather than
post. We are excited about a great new feature: our courtesy
email service. You can receive an email three days before an item
is due, giving you time to return or renew the item. Let us know if you
want us to activate email notices.
