Māori Collections

Each of our three libraries has an Adult Māori Section and also a Junior Māori Section.  In Hastings Library the Adult Māori Section has both reference and lending collections and is located upstairs. 

These collections contain items of cultural, historical, social and language significance for all of Aotearoa.   Emphasis is given to any material of a local nature, particularly Ngāti Kahungunu.

Reference Collections

Our Reference Collections include:

  • General reference works on most subjects
  • Dictionaries, encyclopedias, directories, both general and subject specific
  • Telephone and business directories
  • Electoral rolls (New Zealand)
  • Motor manuals (Hastings only)
  • New Zealand Statutes & Regulations (Hastings only)
  • Local Government consultation documents
  • Maps, atlases
  • Databases online include: Brookers, Fundview & Breakout, and many others

Local History Collection & Archives

Local History Collection

Hastings Library has a Local History Collection covering the history of Hastings and District. These are Reference items and may only be used in the library.  In addition there are many items available in the lending collections.

Community Archives

Both Hastings and Havelock North Libraries have Community Archives.  These are available Monday to Friday only, and it is best to make an appointment with the Archives Librarian at either library. 

Magazines

Hastings District Libraries subscribe to a large number of national and international magazines, covering a wide range of topics.

Most are held in the Magazine Collections at Hastings, Havelock North & Flaxmere Libraries.

In addition there are some special collections of magazines and we also subscribe to online databases, with thousands of magazine titles.

 

New Settlers Collections

ESOL Collection - English for speakers of other languages

Our ESOL collection has more than 600 books and is downstairs in the Non Fiction area of Hastings Library.  These are for practicing your English plus helpful guides to pronunciation, grammar, and spelling. 

Community Languages

The Community Languages section at Hastings Library is downstairs in the Non Fiction wing.  There are more than 1100 books printed in a wide variety of languages.

Junior Collections

All three libraries have great collections of children's items, including books, puzzles, CDs, DVDs, cassettes and talking books.

All ages are catered for, from toddlers to teens. 

Parents - you are welcome to ask the Children's Librarians for books that best suits your child's age and stage in reading.

Junior Parent & Child Collections

Each of our libraries has a Junior Parent & Child Collection, located in the Children's Sections.

These collections include books on parenting and books to help explain various situations to children (at various levels).

 

Newspapers

Hastings District Libraries subscribe to newspapers in various formats:

 At Hastings Library we hold Hawke's Bay Today for one year in print and previous years on microfilm.  Please ask at the desk upstairs to access these.  

Print copies of newspapers are held at the library that receives the subscription for varying lengths of time.  Please ask at the desk.

Genealogy Collection & Microforms

The Genealogy Collection is located upstairs at Hastings Library and includes:

  • Microfiche, microfilms (listed below), including
  • New Zealand Births, Deaths & Marriages to 1990
  • Hawke's Bay newspapers on microfilm
  • Genealogy reference books
  • Local telephone directories
  • Journals (many donated - thanks for this!)
  • Electoral rolls for NZ on microfiche & in print

Available on our Research Computers (free) are:

  • Ancestry Library Edition
  • New Zealand Gazette Archives (one PC only)
  • Papers Past - historic New Zealand newspapers online

Newspapers on Microfilm

Hastings Library holds the following newspapers on microfilm:

  •     HB Tribune                Dec 1910 - Jun 1937
  •     HB Herald Tribune     1937 [Jan] - 1970 [Apr], 1970 [Jun] - 1978 [Nov], 1979 [Jan] - 01 May 1999
  •     Hawke's Bay Today    Apr 1999 -

May be viewed on our two microfilm readers.  Printing available.

Call upstairs and ask at the Reference Desk for assistance in using these.  

Young Adult Collections

All three libraries have Young Adult Collections and elsewhere in the library are CDs, DVDs, videos and of course, books that teens are welcome to borrow. Online Databases are also available for homework research.
