New Service

Need a hand to get your books back to Napier Libraries? We can help!

Drop off your Napier Libraries books at the Hastings, Havelock North or Flaxmere Libraries and we'll get them back for free!

This is a week-day service only, so allow for delays before your books are taken off your card.  The delay may be up to 6 days if you return them to one of our branches on a holiday weekend. We will send your books over as soon as possible, but use of this service is at your own risk. Any late charges are your responsibility.

A bonus - it's environmentally friendly to use public transport!  Thanks to the Regional Council for their assistance with this project.

Landmarks History Group – Rohan Luttrell – Carlton Hotel

Rohan Luttrell is the first speaker for the Landmarks History Group for 2010, and he will give a history of the Carlton Club Hotel (now the site of Breakers on the corner of Karamu and Heretaunga Streets).

The Carlton Club Hotel was built in 1882, and survived the 1931 earthquake because of its wooden construction. The Luttrell family took ownership in 1933 and the hotel was kept in the family until the building was demolished circa 1970 to make way for the present building, now occupied by Breakers.

Rohan Luttrell lived in the Carlton Hotel as a child and witnessed some of the unusual goings on that occurred. These include the antics of a touring French Rugby team staying at the hotel and the 1950s Blossom Festival riot in Hastings, which started in the Albert Hotel across the road.

The talk promises to be entertaining and informative, with Rohan recalling his memories of growing up in the hotel in Hastings.

HB Earthquake

The people of Haiti are very much in the thoughts and prayers of Hawke's Bay people, as we remember the earthquake of 1931.

Tuesday 3 February 1931  - a  typical calm hot Hawke's Bay summer day.  At 46 minutes and 46.3 seconds after 10.00am Hawke's Bay was devastated by two violent shocks in quick succession, followed for days by after shocks.

The earthquake of magnitude 7.8* was recorded all around the world.  More>>

Library members now have the option of receiving all notices by email rather than post.  We are excited about a great new feature: our courtesy email service.  You can receive an email three days before an item is due, giving you time to return or renew the item.  Let us know if you want us to activate email notices.
