"Public libraries at their best are the heartbeat of communities, providing knowlege, pleasure, services and support to all at every stage of their lives." Said by someone important.
At Hastings District Libraries we work closely with our communities to ensure services we are providing enhance their social, cultural and economic wellbeing.
Programmes are developed and implemented in our three libraries depending on the communities wants and needs.
Library use has been on the increase for the last three years.
Last financial year, Hastings District Libraries has a total of 558,303 visitors through our doors and issued 967,844 items - best year ever. That's over 10,700 visitors a week through the three facilities in Hastings, Havelock North and Flaxmere.
Over 21,000 visitors attended more than 670 library events - from preschool storytimes to author talks, school visits and a variety of musical performances, sessions with magicians to sessions with tattooists. HDL has even hosted a donkey and a penguin (but not at the same time).
In excess of 30,100 half-hour sessions of public internet time were logged at all three sites during 2009-10. Flaxmere Library is the second busiest library for internet access!
