Borrowing Information & Charges

General information about borrowing, loan periods, rental & overdue charges, number of items that may be borrowed, receipts, renewals, visitors cards, lost cards and after hours returns.

 

Holds

You may place your own holds (reserves) online, either in the library or from home.  Alternatively, ask a librarian to place these for you.

When the  item arrives in the library you will receive a letter in the mail or by email. Please ensure your contact information is up-to-date.

Call in to the library with your card to have your hold issued. Items must be collected within 10 days.

You will be charged a fee of $1.10 when you collect your item.

We will do our utmost to get the item to you as soon as possible. It is difficult to estimate how long it will take, as this is determined by the current borrower or those who have already placed holds.

Holds may be placed on items showing "Available"..  Please note that occasionally an item with the status "Available" may be issued to another borrower before staff can take it from the shelf to fulfil the request.

If you phone the library for an available item, you may ask to have it set aside for you to collect, but the usual charge of $1.10 applies.

Overdues & Library Notices

Email Notices

Members have the option of receiving all notices by email rather than post, including reserves notices, overdues, charges etc. This now includes a courtesy email service.  You can receive an email three days before an item is due, giving you time to return or renew the item.

Renewals

You are welcome to renew items in person, by phone or online. See below for exceptions.

Items may be renewed once only.

There is no charge for renewing an item, but note that overdues and rental charges may apply..

Rental items cannot be renewed online, however you are welcome to renew rental items in person or by phone.  The rental charge is payable for the new issue period.

An overdue item may be renewed.  An extended loan charge will be added to your library account.  This will be calculated from the overdue date until the renewal date.

Any extended loan charges accrued at the date of renewal will remain on your card until paid.

To renew an item online

Login to My Account on the Catalogue using your library card number and PIN number. (Ask at the desk for a PIN number if you do not have one.)

  • Click on My Account at the top

Returning Items

Items borrowed from Hastings, Havelock North or Flaxmere Libraries may be returned to any of these three libraries.  We will check them in and return them to the library they were borrowed from

Afterhours Returns
  • All items may be returned through the afterhours bins located at all three libraries.
Napier Library Returns
  • Items borrowed from Napier or Taradale Libraries (except City Loans) can be returned to any of our three Hastings Libraries.  We will return them to Napier for you, but please be aware that items will NOT be checked in until they arrive in Napier Library.  This is a weekday service only, so allow for delays before your books are taken off your record (up to 6 days). use is at your own risk and any late charges are your responsibility.
Interloans & City Loans
  • Items borrowed through the Interloan or City Loan services must be returned to the library that issued them to you - i.e. one of our Hastings District Libraries.  We will check them in and return them to the supplying library. 

Self Issue Machines

Self Issue Machines are available at Hastings and Havelock North Libraries.

Please ask for a demonstration if you would like to learn how to use these machines.
