When do I need to use Adobe Digital Editions?

  • Adobe Digital Editions is free software that allows you to download and read EPUB and PDF eBooks on your computer and/or transfer them to eBook readers.

How do I get an Adobe ID?

  • Setting up an Adobe ID is a free.
  • Click on Sign In or My Adobe at the top right then follow instructions for creating an Adobe ID.
  • You need only provide a name, country, and e-mail address. You can create your Adobe ID when prompted within Adobe Digital Editions, or go directly to the Adobe.com, select “My Adobe” in the top-right corner, then click on “My Adobe ID” and follow the instructions

    Note that you create an Adobe ID from a web browser. Once you’ve received confirmation the Adobe ID is created, then you may close the browser and return to Adobe Digital Editions, and enter the Adobe ID and password you created.

What do you need?

  • An internet connected computer or mobile device, such as a tablet or eBook reader
  • A valid Hastings District Library card with pin number
  • Free software or apps relevant to your device

Go to the Libaries' eBook website: http://epukapuka.lib.overdrive.com

Getting Started: PC or eReader

To read or listen to books on a home computer or eReader device you will need to download and install the free software.

On the ePukapuka website go to Help then Software to find both:

  • Overdrive Media Console
  • Adobe Digital Editions

Install one or both depending on your needs.

Borrowing eBooks

eBooks and Audiobooks are now available at Hastings District Libraries ePukapuka OverDrive -


  • ePukapuka OverDrive allows you to download eBooks and audiobooks from home at any time
  • By downloading and installing free software, you can use your library card and PIN to:
    • Transfer eBooks to your computer or portable devices, such as an eBook reader or tablet
    • Transfer audiobooks to your computer or portable devices, such as an MP3 player or iPod
  • OverDrive eBooks are compatible with computers and most eBook readers and mobile devices, except Kindles - read more...

Borrowing basics - ePukapuka OverDrive

  • You may borrow up to 5 items at a time, no rental charge
  • Items are lent to you for 7 or 14 days, then are returned automatically
  • You may return some eBooks before the due date, but not audiobooks
  • It is not possible to renew an item but you may borrow an item again if it has no reserves
  • No overdues, so no overdue charges
  • You may place reserves - no charge for this. You will be notified by email when the item is available.  Reserves waiting to be issued expire after 4 days.
  • You cannot place a reserve on an item while you have it on issue
  • Remove items from your devices when finished
  • eBooks and audio books you have on loan are not listed on your ordinary library account

ePukapuka now offers the choice of either a 7 or 14 day loan period on ebooks and downloadable audiobooks.
